This Dreamcast VGA cable is relatively new to the market (according to Amazon, it was released in December of 2013) and acts as a lower-priced alternative to the increasingly costly Dreamcast VGA boxes.

After spending some time with it, I definitely think it’s worth a purchase for any Dreamcast-owner with an HDTV. The picture is fantastic (up to 720 X 480 resolution) and the RCA audio inputs totally get the job done.

One thing to check before you buy is that your HDTV not only has a VGA input, but also corresponding audio inputs as well. I found that while both of my TVs had the VGA plug, only one had inputs for the red and white audio cables.

The picture on the two games I tried (Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2 and Crazy Taxi) was a marked improvement over the visuals from the S-Video cable I was currently using with my Dreamcast.

Playing Dreamcast games in high definition and full-screen is still pretty exciting and kind of gives the system a new lease on life as we approach the 15th anniversary of the console’s U.S. release later this year.

Unless any unexpected issues pop up (which I’ll definitely update this post with), I can fully recommend this cable. Just make sure you look for the VGA Box logo on the packaging of your favorite Dreamcast games to see that they’re compatible :-)
